Welcome to our Reels Fives pre-launch movie rankings for Classic Zombie movies. Classic Zombie movies, at times dubbed 'pre-Romero zombie movies', are those films from the beginning of the zombie film genre in 1932 until 1968 when Night of the Living Dead (1968) redefined the genre. The original concept of a zombie was borrowed from Haitian folklore. In French creole the word zonbi refers to an animated corpse revived using spiritual or magical means, such as by a witch or sorcerer. Victor Halperin’s White Zombie (1932) starring early horror titan Bela Lugosi is agreed by most people to be the first feature length zombie film. Starting with White Zombie (1932) movies applied their interpretation of the Haitian folklore concept. However, in the decades following White Zombie (1932) the zombie archetype began to evolve. Generally zombies were mindless slow-moving humans that had risen from the dead or come under the control of some entity or person. For example, Ed Wood ties in a science fiction element in his film Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) in which aliens resurrect corpses and control them through the stimulation of pituitary and pineal glands in attempts to, eventually, destroy mankind. In a similar fashion, combining science fiction and zombies, Jerry Warren’s Teenage Zombies (1959) is about a mad scientist who is trying to take over the United States by transforming everyone into zombies that they may command. Teenage Zombies (1959) complies with zombies being slow moving and under control but does not incorporate corpse reanimation or a supernatural element. Other relatively well known zombie movies within this genre include White Zombie's sequel Revolt of the Zombies (1936) , King of the Zombies (1941), Voodoo Man (1944) starring Bela Lugosi, and Invisible Invaders (1959). After conducting research, our Reel Fives team has found 163 published zombie movie rankings (listed at the bottom of this post). For each list we have taken the zombie movies they ranked as their top five and include them in Reel Fives' top zombie movies list. Then, in turn, we ranked our top zombie movies list based on how many lists' top five movie each zombie movie made. In other words Reel Fives' pre-launch zombie movie rankings are based on the top movies through aggregation of published zombie movie rankings. We recently released our pre-launch top 5 zombie movie rankings and are now providing our zombie sub-genre rankings. For this we consider the rankings of the zombie movies for each sub-genre among Reel Fives' top zombie movies list.
Among the zombie movie rankings that are currently published on the web, we only found four classic zombie movies making any top fives. White Zombie (1932) made it as number one likely due to its popularity as the first zombie feature film. Similarly, Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) gained some attention from today's zombie fans after its appearance in Tim Burton's comedy biopic Ed Wood (1994). A large portion of Ed Wood(1994) is devoted to the making of Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959). I Walked with a Zombie (1943) and The Plague of the Zombies (1966) are highly stylized films that made a contribution to the early horror genre in the use of lighting and cinematography to set the spooky atmosphere that is found in many later horror films. In addition, especially in the case of I walked with a Zombie (1943), they are among the first films to use the zombie genre as a form of social commentary.
