to our Reels Fives pre-launch movie rankings for Romzoms, or
Romero-style zombie movies. After conducting research, our Reel Fives
team has found 163 published zombie movie rankings (listed at the bottom
of this post). For each list, we have taken the zombie movies they
ranked as their top five and included them in Reel Fives' top zombie
movies list. Then, in turn, we ranked our top zombie movies list based
on how many lists of top five movies each zombie movie made. In other
words, Reel Fives' pre-launch zombie movie rankings are based on the top
movies through aggregation of published zombie movie rankings.
The
reason we have the Romero-style zombie movie romzom genre is that we
feel that the zombie movie watching experience is different for these
specific types of movies and they tell a very similar story through
different points of view. When watching a zombie movie, many people
expect it to follow the Romero-style zombie movie; however, the broad
zombie movie category also includes possession-based zombies, fast and
intelligent zombies (28 days later, Return of the living dead), and
zombies in the context where apocalypse is neither imminent, never
happened, or not even a real threat. We include this genre because not
only did George Romero essentially create the modern zombie movie, but
he also has been such a prolific director in the zombie genre through
the 6 current entries in his Dead series (listed in ranked* order: Night
of the Living Dead (1968, 69%), Dawn of the Dead (1978, 63%), Day of
the Dead(1985, 10%), Land of the Dead (2005, 2%), Diary of the Dead
(2007, 1%), Survival of the Dead (2009, 0%)) that there is a
well-defined reality that is consistent through his movies.
However,
the Romero-style zombie movie sub-genre, just like its parent genre
(zombie film), is complex, as there are slight inconsistencies with
movies that fit into it. For example, some movies might feel and look
like a Romero-style zombie movie but might contain nuanced departures,
such as requiring dying from a zombie bite in order to become a zombie
(which Romero's dead series does not follow). Therefore, the list here
constitutes films that depict a zombie world consistent with Romero
zombies. For
this reason, unlike other zombie sub-genres, identifying romzoms took a
great deal of care given the specific rules that need to be, at least
loosely, followed. The way we have thought of it is as if the
movies were simply the story followed by the Romero zombie movies as
viewed by other characters or at different places in time. For example,
Fido, which is a zombie comedy, made our top 10 Romero-style zombie
movie rankings. This movie depicts a point in time after the apocalypse,
where zombies were domesticated. Since the idea of zombie domestication
began with Romero's Day of the Dead (1985) it is consistent with the
Romero story. It is surprising how many zombie movies did not enter into this sub-genre. While
some of the top movies make this category, overall the rankings for the
top romzoms (Romero-style zombie movies) are scattered throughout the
overall rankings and have a (relatively) gradual descent in
percentages.
We
understand that some of movies fitting into this zombie sub-genre and
the movie rankings for Romero-style zombie films are up for debate. So

that is included in Reel Fives' top zombie movie list or zombie movie
rankings, please let us know through commenting below. Part of our
objective in creating this site was to be able to attain a clearer
picture of what movies constitute the existing film genres and
sub-genres. Although we usually present the top 5 movies in the Reel
Fives pre-launch movie rankings, given that George Romero holds several
spots in romzoms (Romero style zombie movies) we are including the
zombie movie rankings for the top 10 romzoms to introduce variation.
This is the last zombie sub-genre we are covering under the zombie genre, in which we also included top five classic zombie movies and top five zomcoms (zombie comedies). Next on the Reel Fives pre-launch zombie movie rankings will be the complete list of top zombie movies ranked.
